Pro-Russian Separatists Ask Moscow for Protection in Moldova
By DW News
The Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria has asked Moscow for protection. The pro-Russia separatists accuse the pro-Western Moldovan government of waging economic warfare gainst them. Tensions between the two neighbours have been rising ever since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria is a tiny sliver of land located between Ukraine and Moldova – and falls within Russia’s sphere of influence. It broke away from Moldova during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, but ISN’T internationally recognized.
Here’s what others had to say:
@Dave102693
Isn’t this how the Russo-Ukrainian war start? A bunch of separatists ask for help, then the tanks a few months later come in into the non separatists regions on a “special military operation”?
@rebeccaharrishunt1181
Moldova should be supported in offering Transnistrians transportation assistance to Russia. Go. You want to be Russian, go to Russia.
@colincooper8727
According to Russia every country in Europe is within “its sphere of influence”.
@sergeybebenin
Why are they complaining about “economic war”?
They separated to be independent and wanted to unite with ruszia. Well, they got what they wanted ????
No one owes them any economic cooperation
@abody499
The correct term is Russian FSB agents.
@MausTheGerman
I don’t see that Russia is currently capable to invade Moldova from Transnistria with the troops they currently have there. To do this, Russia would have to transport more troops, vehicles and equipment by plane, which would certainly be shot down. Since 30 years Transnistria is asking Russia constantly for „protection“ – it’s not a new thing. I also think that Russia has always been quite happy with the status of Transnistria being a pro-Russian unrecognized country – it’s the best place for Russia to do dubious businesses and money laundering.
@conroc01
This is a Russian operation. Interesting this comes after Macron’s statements regarding sending troops to Ukraine. Question is how Europe/NATO responds if Russia escalates into Moldova.
@MrDosonhai
If there’s anything we learn from this whole mess is that never let your enemies hold a large concentrated of their population inside your territory.
@chesh3712
Moldova would be toast if connected to Russia or Belarus.
@putinhuylo5404
I am more interested to know and see will Europe (as political entity) react properly, no matter what Putin does, or just will stick it’s head in to the sand as usually.
@davidkingsberry5990
Destabilization of a country is Russias expertise.
@perseusarkouda
Beware if you have any Russian neighbors. They might want to be protected too.
@louise7347
It’s the Russian playbook, and should be called out for what it is! Time to stand up to the gaslighting and manipulation!
@Muirlinn
It doesn’t matter how many Russian speakers are located in any country. A nation is its own country. Sholul the English reclaim all English speaking nations? If you’re so linguistically and culturally Russian then you know where you can move to and be welcomed. After all, Russia has a lot of land as it is the biggest country already on the planet. Is our Moon next!?!
@torehaaland6921
Luckily, no Russian flights can get there without crossing either Ukraine or nato territory. I doubt if military transports from Russia over either will be welcomed with open arms in the current climate.
@stupidburp
Moldova should mobilize their military and recapture their territory. Ukraine should provide assistance from the other side, giving intelligence and preventing movement across the border.
@elvenkind6072
Correction: Moscow asked (in a friendly way, with a few suitcases filled with Rubles) the Pro-Russian separatists from Transnistria to ask Moscow for help.
@foilhat1138
Support for reunification with Romania has been trending upwards for years, and is now almost 50% in Moldova and over 50% in Romania. I wonder if this recent ‘cry for help’ will shift the needle any and how long until there is the political and societal will for it.
@sadiqkhawaja7019
There was an interview on CNN of a war historian claiming that this war might spread to Moldova, very prescient
@Dave102693
Will Putin be able to recreate the Russian Empire in his lifetime? He has been trying since the 1st Chechnya war.
@julianbailey2749
If Moldova wanted to be really cruel, they would give Transnistria independence then close the border to all vehicle traffic, pedestrians could move relatively freely. Transnistria would be dead in months.
