Australian government commits $70 million in Ukraine defensive support, $25 million in aid
Morrison turns to Ukraine.
He says the Australian government will commit US $50 million to support both lethal and nonlethal defensive support for Ukraine.
The overwhelming majority of that, that is some AU $70 million, will be in the lethal category. We are talking missiles, ammunition, we are talking supporting them in their defence of their own home land in Ukraine and we will do that in partnership with NATO. I am not going to go into the specifics of that because I don’t plan to give the Russian government a heads up about what is coming their way but I can assure them it is coming your way.
In addition, the government will commit an initial $25 million in humanitarian support including some AU $35 million to international organisations to support their efforts with shelter, food, medical care, water and education support.
This will be our opening contribution. We expect over time there will be further requests and we will be addressing those as time goes on and the needs.
